The ability to see data is the most critical, first step to understanding, troubleshooting and then predicting growth on a network. Bandwidth trends, Capacity and device counts in very large complex task on a virtualized network. Devices on one segment today might be across the country the next, then across the world tomorrow. This is not your older Brother’s network. To understand traffic data, you need the entire picture from source, throughout the network, all the way to the ultimate endpoint. The fact one location or another end or the other does not matter to the endpoints any longer, but your tools must be able to be just as comprehensive and accurate as the data flows themelves.
The problem is well beyond the capability of simple SPAN, MIRROW, COPY or TCPDUMP techniques we’ve relied on for many years. The network need the same “virtualization” ability as VM Servers and Fabric Networks now have to be effective.
